    Sun 24 Feb 2019 Mr B

Thank you to all those parents, carers and grandparents who attended the Y5/6 Inspire events in the final week of the half-term term. Hopefully, you enjoyed being in school, spending time with your child, seeing some of their work and learning a little about how we teaching reading and spelling at Strawberry Fields. Below there is a selection of feedback comments we received.

Did you enjoy the event? If so, why?

It was good to see work examples.

Seeing the different ways my child learns spelling.

Interesting to see how it is much harder than it was in my day!

If we were to do another Inspire event in the future with a different theme, would you attend again?

Any. I like getting techniques to help at home.

Yes – was good to do something else after maths last year.

Yes – my daughter always talks about her friends but not always about the learning.

Do you feel that you learned more about your child’s educational experience at Strawberry Fields?

  • Football (again!)

    Thu 14 Feb 2019 Mr B
It has been a very busy few weeks for sport in school! On Wednesday, three of our teams played at the same time against Harewood. All three of our teams won their games! Or Y6 boys' team ran out 4-0 winners, with goals from Harry, Oliver and two from Riley. Our Y5/6 girls' team won 6-3, with 5 (!) goals from Lily-May and a first ever goal for Lily-Rose. Finally, our 3/4 team won 2-1, with goals from Kayden and Louix. Well done to everyone who played and thanks to all the staff and volunteers who helped out, and to the parents and carers who came out to cheer us on!
  • Y3/4 football vs. Frobelian

    Mon 11 Feb 2019 Mr B
Our Y3/4 football team played their first match of the year this afternoon against Frobelian. Within two minutes of the kick-off, Frobelian scored from a corner to take a 1-0 lead and this remained the scoreline for the remainder of the game. Both teams gave committed performances and it is testament to how close the contest was that it was settled by a single, early goal. Well done to all players on both sides.
  • Football - Y5/6 girls vs. Woodlesford

    Thu 07 Feb 2019 Mr B
Our girls football team played a friendly match against Woodlesford this afternoon. It was great to be able to involve some new players, and over half our team had never played a competitive football match before! Although we did not win, it was encouraging to see the progress the team made across the game. As the match went on, our girls became increasingly confident on the ball, braver when tackling, and showed increasing positional and tactical awareness. Most importantly, all the girls enjoyed the game and we will look forward to playing more matches in the future.
  • Football - Y6 boys vs. Tranmere Park

    Tue 05 Feb 2019 Mr B
Tonight, our Y6 boys' football team was involved in a very exciting cup game against Tranmere Park. The match was fairly evenly matched in the first half, but Tranmere Park took their chances better and led 2-0 at the break. We came back early in the second half with a goal from Oliver, before Tranmere Park restored their two-goal cushion midway through the half. With five minutes remaining, we were trailing 3-1, but late goals from Oliver and Riley levelled the scores, and the game went to extra time. Unfortunately (for us!), with only a minute or two remaining, Tranmere Park were awarded a penalty for handball, which crept inside the post despite Taylor diving and getting a hand to the ball. The game finished 4-3 to Tranmere Park. Well done to everyone from both schools - both teams gave great accounts of themselves.
  • Key Stage One 'Inspire' events

    Mon 04 Feb 2019 Mr B

Last week, our three Key Stage One classes all held an Inspire event. Parents, grandparents and carers were invited in to school to spend time with their children and learn about some of the ways reading and phonics are taught at Strawberry Fields. Thank you so much to all those adults who were able to come in to school to work alongside their children, and thank you to Miss. Evison, Mrs. Morton and Miss. Chermside for organising and hosting these events. The response from our guests was uniformly and overwhelmingly positive. Below is just a small selection of the positive responses we received. Thank you for your comments and suggestions for future events.

Did you enjoy the event? If so, why?

Yes, very much. Firstly to learn more about what my child is doing in class, but also to spend such quality time with him.

Yes, lovely to work with my child and share and help their activities. Also, they were very excited I was coming to school!

Yes. This was the first time I’ve been to an event like this. Was great to do the phonic activities with my son.

Yes, it’s always lovely to see how and what they are learning. It’s reassuring to hear the SATs are so low key.

Yes. Gave me an understanding of how phonics is taught to the children.

Do you feel that you learned more about your child’s educational experience at Strawberry Fields?

Good to see how far all the kids have come since September.

Yes. It made phonics clearer to me.

It was good to see in reality and action what my daughter talks about at home and see how confident she is within the school environment.

Yes. He was more confident showing me what he is able to do.

Yes. It helps to see how they learn.

Yes, it was good to have more information on how to help them at home.

Did you find the film at the start informative/interesting?

Very, it really ‘hit home’ about how important reading is.

Very powerful. Really made me think about the importance of reading.

Was an eye opener. Shows parents need to spend more time reading.

Yes. Very thought provoking and will make me try harder home.

I thought it was a great film showing the importance of reading to your child.

Do you feel better able to support your child with their Reading and phonics learning as a result of attending the session today?

Picked up a few tips and will integrate them into our usual reading sessions.

100%. We both need to spend extra time on our child’s phonics.

My daughter regularly reads for fun at home and we practise the techniques spoken about at home already. Good to know that we are doing the right things to reinforce and help her development.

I feel I have more of an understanding of what they learn from reading. It is not just the words, it is understanding what they are reading.

Yes, it has helped and given me new ideas for activities at home.

Do you have any further comments?

Thanks to everyone for the hard work they put in with the children.

    Brilliant! Really informative and enjoyable.

Very enjoyable, well presented. It showed the passion the school has to see our children succeed.

Keep up the great work. Inspire events are very beneficial to children and parents/grandparents/ carers. Thanks you.

Very enjoyable and informative, nice to see my child in a group/class environment and how she reacts to other children.

I think the chance to be able to come in to school and do this is amazing.

    Keep up the good work!!

  • Girls' football

    Fri 01 Feb 2019 Mr B

On Wednesday afternoon, six Y5/6 girls took part in a football tournament at 'Football World'. We had three matches in our group. The first ended with a 2-2 draw and we won our second game 3-2. This meant a draw in the final match against Allerton would have seen us win our group and go into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the game ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat. Allerton went on to be overall tournament winners, winning 3-0 in the semi-final and 2-0 in the final.

Well done to all the girls! You were fantastic ambassadors for our school. Not only that, but the progress some of you have made in your football has been really impressive!
