  • Eco-council Growing Tower project

    Sun 20 Oct 2019 Mr B

Over the past few weeks, our eco-council have been learning about the United Nations Development Goals, specifically Goal 15 - 'Life on Land'. We have been involved in a project organised by ReThink Food, in which 17 schools received a sponsored aeroponic growing tower (ours was sponsored by the Yorkshire Agriculture Society). Each school was then given one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to learn about. Over the course of the project, we have used our growing tower to grow food, 'met' a scientist via a video link-up, and have spent time learning about innovative solutions to some of the challenges facing our planet as the global population increases. We were also visited by a representative of the Green Party.

The finale of the project took place on Wednesday evening at the Left Bank Event Space in Leeds. The work of all seventeen schools was displayed and representatives from the companies who had sponsored the growing towers, as well as others who had an interest in the project, attended. The food from the towers was harvested and eaten. Four of our eco-council represented our school at the event and impressed all the visitors with their confidence and knowledge. In fact, it was reported to us that some of the delegates couldn't stop talking about how great our children were, and we have now been asked to send the children to work with ReThink Food at another event!

We could not be prouder of Molly, Harriet, Hana and Georgia, who represented us at the ReThink Food event, as well as the other members of the eco-council who all worked together so well to gather knowledge.

Thank you to Rethink Food for involving us, and to the Yorkshire Agricultural Society for sponsoring our growing tower. We can't wait to get it replanted again after half-term!

  • Eco-council RERF visit

    Wed 16 Oct 2019 Mr B
On Monday, 10 members of our school eco-council visited the 'RERF' (Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility) in Leeds. It was a fascinating visit and we all learned lots, for example, we discovered the building has over 111,000 plants growing on its 'living wall'. We learned how the facility processes all of the waste from the city's household waste bins to separate out any recyclable materials and then burns the remainder to generate electricity for 22,000 homes in the area. Even the ash left behind is used as aggregate for road building projects! Thank you to Helen and Gush at the RERF for hosting us, and local councillors Mark Dobson and Suzanne McCormack for attending with us and arranging the visit.
  • Year 3/4 girls' football

    Wed 16 Oct 2019 Mr. B
Miss Chermside had a lovely day last Friday when she took twelve of our Year 3 and 4 girls to a football event. The morning was spent on training and skills activities, then in the afternoon there was a tournament against the other schools present. Our girls did really well and finished second. The girls were an absolute delight all day, sensible, respectful to the coaches, and joining in with all the activities. Well done!
  • Robinwood

    Thu 10 Oct 2019 Mr B

Earlier this week, our Year Six children and four members of staff went to the Robinwood adventurous activities centre for a three-day, two-night residential. We could not have been prouder of our children - their behaviour and manners were excellent, which was commented on by the Robinwood staff. One supervisor told us that when they see the Strawberry Fields booking, they always know it's going to be a good group!

It was so lovely to see what a supportive, kind and caring group of children we have in Year Six. The encouragement they offered one another at different times, when facing new challenges or feeling nervous, was fantastic. Every single child did something new, showed resilience, and pushed themselves to do something outside their comfort zone. They should all be so very, very proud of themselves!

  • An exciting start to the year!

    Thu 10 Oct 2019 Mr B
As ever, there has been all kinds of exciting things going on at Strawberry Fields over the first few weeks of the term. Year Five have had an introduction to archery from the 'Bowmen of Leeds', our Y5/6 girls have taken part in a football tournament, we have hosted Macmillan coffee mornings for each phase of school, raising over £500 for a very good cause, and our eco-council have been busy learning about tree planting, speaking to a representative from the Green Party and finding out about possible technological solutions to some environmental challenges.
  • Robinwood

    Mon 07 Oct 2019
Year Six (and their teachers!) are very excited to be going to Robinwood this morning for our residential. Hopefully, the rain will stop but we're going to have a great time either way!
